Healthcare equipment costs continue to increase, and along with rising infection rates, jeopardize successful patient outcomes. As a result, healthcare educators continue to seek the most realistic simulations for their students to provide a safe environment to practice their skills. Simulation equipment is expensive, and educators look for learning activities that scale to fit their student populations, particularly when the activities are complex. Ultrasound technology provides "value added" to patient care, and more nurse practitioners are using this skill. Purchasing enough machines for all students to practice is not realistic. Immersive training prior to the use of an actual ultrasound machine can bridge the gap between knowledge and hands-on practice, providing better efficiencies. This session will demonstrate a virtual reality (VR) application developed for immersive ultrasound training with nurse practitioner students. A clinical expert demonstrates the correct method of recording and analyzing the ultrasound output, which is viewed by the student using a VR headset. The immersive session can be paused, rewound, or branched to other spheres. Questions will be asked, and answers recorded using xAPI. Cases can be replayed multiple times, thereby increasing retention. Students will then be in a position to use the actual ultrasound machine with increased efficiency, safety and knowledge in ultrasound interpretation. The session will also cover items such as summarizing the design process for interactive VR scenarios, explaining the appropriate filming techniques and technology, and the actual building process for creating an immersive scenario from raw footage.
